Description

The Cycladic figurines were recently discovered through excavations for the ancient Cycladic civilization, which is the most important civilization in the early Bronze Age, dating back to the third millennium BC. These stone figurines were made mainly of white marble, a material that was found in abundance in most Cycladic islands. Apart from marble, there were discovered some figurines made of copper, ivory and lead.
Most Cycladic figurines have been found inside of tombs and sanctuaries, while they were mainly used for religious purpose. They used to depict respectable ancestors or heroes of the Cycladic tradition. Their height varied around 25-30 cm, but some of them reached up to one meter. In their majority, they represented naked women, with their hands folded in their chest. Therefore archeologists assume that these figurines represent the Goddess of Fertility. Their significance is really important, as they are the only source of information about the Cycladic Culture.
